Update on the UBGF Running Grounds as of May 23, 2018
The following information was given to me today by Mr.John Morgan, wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Wildlife.
About ten days ago the Department entered our grounds and collected one dead rabbit and harvested one live rabbit from each of our three enclosures. Two of the dead rabbits tested positive for tularemia, one carcass was too decomposed to test. Of the three rabbits harvested, one was damaged too bad to test and the other two tested negative.
The Department of Wildlife has asked permission to depopulate the pens. This was approved by the UBGF board and is supposed to start happening tonight and they plan to test the first ten rabbits they remove. They also plan to try to collect ticks tomorrow for more testing.
We were also asked about mowing and burning and are still working on this. They are trying to find out if the smoke would possibly make the disease go airborne?
As for getting back on our property, I don’t see that happening until more testing is done and a plan is in place to resolve the problem.
This is all the information I have at this time. I will give more updates as I get information. Anyone with questions can call.
